DVD, or Digital Versatile disc can store data, videos and good quality sound. They have the same appearance as CDs but they are encoded differently and can hold more information.

*When was the technology invented?
DVDs were presented to the world in the december of 1995 but it was worked on in the 1990s. Toshiba first worked on it but later Phillips and Sony agreed to help. They made one modification, EFMPlus, which was designed by Kees Immink. EFMPlus was chosen because it had great resistance to scratches and fingerprints. But the capacity of the disk had to be reduced to 4.7GB instead of the original 5GB. Later on in May 1997, the DVD Forum replace the DVD Consortium

*Where would you find this technology?
Now Digital Vesatile Discs are found all around the world. It is sold in video stores, blank DVDs and ones that are used for movies and videos.

*Do you personally own a device with this technology?
Yes, I own DVDs and DVD players. I use DVDs to watch movies with good quality sound and pictures.

*What are the main uses for this technology?
DVDs are most popular for watching movies. Now it is sold in many stores.

*Are there other uses that you can think of?
Other then watching movies, I think it is also used for listening to music, DVDs can fit alot of data so the higher the capacity the more music.

*Do you feel this technology will be used in 10 years from now or be replaced by something better?
I think it might still be used in 10 years but not as popular as today, maybe it would be in the place the CDs are now, not very popular but cheaper. I think in the future the Blu-ray will be used more then the DVD, because it has a higher capacity. Maybe the CD will rarely be used and the DVD would just be another way of buying cheaper movies. I don’t think DVDs would be the same price becuase people would find the Blu-ray more useful than the DVD. Their price would lower.

Question #1 – How is technology used in education? (overall)

Technology helps us research for projects and assignments, the computer helps us find information in the internet. Some sites that we find teach us about a topic and we can learn from it. Some things like calculators help us calculate big numbers in math, or translators can help other people to learn about other languages and use it correctly. It is even used for documentaries on the TV. Documentaries can also help people learn about different things. Technology is also used for typing our homework and sometimes in Microsoft Word it spell checks our words, it also helps with our grammar and our vocabulary. Microsoft helps us to find synonyms and antonyms, it also helps us translate some words into different languages. The internet and Microsoft develop  our vocabulary. Some search engines can also find sites that can teach us about a specific topic like google, yahoo, wikipedia and more. We can learn alot from technologies we use.

Question #2 - How do you personally use technology in aiding your learning at NJIS (during school, homework, etc)?

I use technology, the computer, to type up my homework and help me find information for projects and others. Sometimes if I’m not sure how to do something I would use technology, the phone, to call some one for help. Technology helps us communicate, wether its MSN, emails, handphones, or telephones, they all help us to contact one another. During school we use technology to learn more about a subject we are learning. For example if we were learning about plate techtonic in science then we would research about it in the internet. One thing we did was played a simulation that helps us to understand more about the subject. In school we also make many projects with the help of Photoshop. Photoshop helps us to make projects more interesting and colorful. Photoshop, Microsoft, and the internet is very useful for me because they all help with my school work.

Question #3 – Does technology improve your education or create more complexity (therefore becoming a negative aspect)?

I think technology sometimes makes it harder for some people to get information because they don’t know how to use it, but once you learn how to use it it’s really useful and gives a much easier way to find the information. If a person didn’t know how to work microsoft then he/she wouldn’t be able to type up they’re homework. If that person didn’t know how to use the internet, then i think he/she would have a hard time trying to find useful information. It would also be harder for them to communicate to their friends. If they didn’t know how to email or how to use the telephone, then they would find it difficult to contact other people without sending a snail mail. But even snail mail needs technology because if some one wanted to send a mail to another person in another country then the mail would have to be taken by the plane. Technology is very useful, Once people know how to use it, it can help many people. Even the computers are called for to help the mathematicians to find the biggest prime number. They calculate numbers we don’t even know about.
